A trading strategy can look profitable before costs and unprofitable after them. That is especially true for short-term forex systems, where a few tenths of a pip may represent a meaningful share of the expected gain. Tickmill's Classic and Raw accounts make an instructive case study: the price you see and the total amount you pay are related, but not identical.

This guide starts with the arithmetic, then shows where live execution complicates it. All example prices below are hypothetical calculations, not Tickmill live prices or historical results. Account conditions and instruments vary by legal entity, so use your own contract specifications before comparing providers.

Start with four cost components

The apparent “spread” is only one potential charge. A practical model separates (1) spread, (2) dealing commission, (3) overnight financing or swaps, and (4) slippage and currency conversion. Not all trades incur every component. A forex position opened and closed within the same session may avoid overnight swaps, while an overnight carry position cannot.

A narrow quoted spread is an input to the model, not the answer. Cost should be reviewed per completed trade and over a representative month.

How pip value changes with volume

For EUR/USD, one standard lot is commonly 100,000 units of the base currency. With USD as the quote and account currency, a one-pip move is roughly USD 10 per standard lot, USD 1 per 0.10 lot and USD 0.10 per 0.01 lot. The pip value can change for other pairs and account currencies, and CFD contract sizes differ by instrument. Never copy a forex lot example directly onto gold or an index.

EUR/USD positionApproximate USD value of one pipSpread cost at 1.0 pip
0.01 standard lot$0.10$0.10
0.10 standard lot$1.00$1.00
1.00 standard lot$10.00$10.00

These values help explain why smaller accounts need both careful lot sizing and realistic fee estimates. A commission quoted “per lot per side” scales with volume, but a minimum fee or non-forex contract structure may change the calculation.

Classic versus Raw: a worked comparison

Tickmill's international homepage lists Classic as spread-inclusive and Raw as having a separate commission of about USD 3 per standard lot per side, as checked in October 2026. The homepage advertises minimum spreads starting from approximately 1.6 pips for Classic and 0.0 pips for Raw. A starting minimum is not an average spread and should never be used as a promise of what you will receive in the next session.

Imagine you record an illustrative 1.4-pip effective spread on one account and a 0.3-pip effective spread on another. Assume both are EUR/USD trades of one standard lot, valued at USD 10 per pip, and the second account charges USD 3 per side. The rough completed-deal costs would be:

AssumptionSpread componentCommissionTotal
Classic, 1.4 pips1.4 × $10 = $14$0$14
Raw, 0.3 pips0.3 × $10 = $3$6 round trip$9
Raw, 1.1 pips during volatility1.1 × $10 = $11$6 round trip$17

All three rows use invented spreads for calculation. They demonstrate a general principle: even with the same commission, a wider execution spread can erase a headline advantage. For a strategy with a small target, two or three pips of unexpectedly poor execution may materially change the trade's outcome.

What is a round-turn commission?

Some pricing tables state USD 3 “per lot per side.” A trade has at least an opening side and a closing side. In a simple one-lot round trip, the commission therefore totals USD 6. A position split into partial closes may be accounted for differently in the platform's history, but the economics still depend on volume traded. Read the complete contract schedule, including any symbol-specific exceptions.

If you trade one standard lot 40 times in a month, a USD 6 round-turn commission alone would total USD 240, before spreads and swaps. Reducing unnecessary trades may matter more than choosing between two nearly identical minimum-spread claims.

Swaps and Wednesday rollover

Holding leveraged forex and CFD positions overnight can attract financing charges or credits. The amount depends on the symbol, trade direction, position size and current swap rate; it is not a constant value that can be copied from an old blog post. Tickmill's help information notes that triple swaps for FX pairs and metals are typically applied on Wednesday to account for weekend settlement, while other instruments can follow different schedules.

Check current long and short swap rates in your platform's symbol specification. If your strategy holds positions across multiple nights, record those amounts separately in your trading journal. Avoid the common mistake of subtracting dealing commission but forgetting a series of overnight charges.

Slippage, spreads at news and execution quality

A platform can display a price that is no longer available by the time your order reaches the market. In calm conditions the difference may be minor; during a major central-bank statement, payroll report, weekend gap or sudden drop in liquidity, it can be larger. A stop-loss defines a requested exit level, not a guaranteed execution price. Positive slippage can also occur, but it is unwise to base a trading plan on receiving it.

Instead of relying on a single screenshot, compare actual transaction histories over similar trading windows. Record signal price, executed entry, executed exit, quoted spread if captured, commission and swap. Distinguish a strategy's poor signal from poor execution; both affect results, but the remedies are different.

How account currency changes the numbers

If your account currency differs from the instrument's quote currency, you may need conversion to compare costs fairly. The EUR/USD USD-pip examples above are intentionally simple. A GBP-denominated account trading EUR/USD, or a USD account trading USD/JPY, needs an appropriate current exchange rate for an accurate monetary pip value.

For more complex cases you can experiment with the ForexSignal24 forex calculators. Treat the results as estimates; check the broker's contract size, tick value, currency convention and swap policy.

A practical cost-audit routine

  1. Pick three sessions in which your strategy genuinely trades, not only the calmest hour of the day.
  2. Record at least several actual spread observations for the relevant instrument and account.
  3. Calculate entry and exit commissions based on traded lots rather than counting orders alone.
  4. Include overnight charges, currency conversion and measured differences between requested and filled price.
  5. Compare cost as a share of expected gross return, not only absolute dollars.
  6. Repeat periodically because pricing and liquidity are not static.

Frequently asked questions

Does Tickmill charge zero commission on every account?

No. Published account choices include commission-free spread-inclusive pricing and commission-based raw-spread pricing. The exact account and instrument terms must be verified.

Can the spread be 0.0 pips?

Some accounts advertise spreads starting at zero. That describes a possible minimum, not typical pricing and certainly not the absence of other charges.

How do I compare two brokers fairly?

Use the same currency pair, volume, trading hour and closing assumption, then compare round-trip costs and actual execution. Deposit incentives and introductory promotions do not replace a normal-cost comparison.
