Tickmill Islamic Swap-Free Accounts: Holding Fees, Grace Periods and Risks

Editorial check: October 2026 · Independent education · Trading terms vary by legal entity and country.
A swap-free trading account can sound like an uncomplicated way to hold forex positions overnight. In practice, the word “swap-free” answers only part of the cost question. Tickmill describes Islamic versions of its Classic and Raw trading accounts that remove conventional overnight swaps, while certain instruments may incur handling fees after a stated grace period. That distinction matters to swing traders and anyone keeping positions open for several nights.
This is a cost-and-operations explainer for international readers, not a religious ruling. Account eligibility, applicable fees, trading instruments and terms may depend on the Tickmill company contracting with you. Always read the current official Islamic-account schedule before using the feature.
What changes when a Classic or Raw account becomes Islamic?
Tickmill’s official Islamic-account page explains that an existing Classic or Raw account may be converted to an Islamic account, subject to applicable requirements. The basic platform and execution setup are described as remaining comparable, while conventional swap charges are removed. But fee replacement mechanisms and eligible instruments must be checked individually.
For example, changing an account’s status does not retroactively alter the price at which an order was filled or remove the ordinary spread, dealing commission or slippage. A Raw account may still charge commissions for opening and closing trades even when the overnight interest component has changed. For the basic pricing distinction, see our Classic vs Raw account comparison.
Grace periods are instrument-specific
The published grace period indicates how long certain positions may be held before a stated handling charge becomes applicable. It is not a promise that every symbol is free of every holding-related cost indefinitely. Tickmill gives an illustrative example using EURCZK: if a position is opened on day one, the example allows the first three nights without the handling fee and begins charging from the fourth night. An instrument-specific schedule determines the actual rule.
Tickmill separately describes an exception for selected instruments on Classic swap-free accounts, where handling fees begin from day 41. Do not extrapolate this exception to every pair, metal or account type. The online schedule and legal agreement are the controlling references; blog summaries can become outdated when terms change.
| Question | What to verify in your actual account |
|---|---|
| Can I convert this account? | Entity eligibility, Classic/Raw account status, Client Area approval |
| How long is the fee-free period? | Exact symbol, account variant and grace-day table |
| What happens after grace ends? | Handling fee per lot and the time it is posted |
| What about crypto CFDs? | Separate availability and post-grace conditions |
What are handling fees, and how do they scale?
According to Tickmill, applicable handling fees are quoted per lot and can be converted into the account’s base currency. That makes volume important. If a published fee for an illustrative instrument were F dollars per lot per overnight charge, then holding 0.20 lot for N chargeable nights gives a simplified total of 0.20 × F × N dollars, before any currency conversion. This is a formula, not a claimed live fee quote.
Overnight cost checkpoint
A low spread cannot tell you the total cost of a multi-day position. Trading commission, spread, handling charges and currency conversion may each matter.
Tickmill indicates that fees may change at its discretion. If you maintain positions over a holiday or are trading around a server-time rollover, confirm how the broker counts nights and posts charges. Treat a fee schedule saved as a screenshot several months ago as historical evidence, not necessarily today’s price.
Cryptocurrency CFD positions have a separate warning
The official Tickmill Islamic-account page flags a post-grace swap rule for long digital-currency CFD positions after an initial five-day period, describing an annualised ten-percent charge. That detail alone illustrates why “swap-free” cannot be assumed to mean the same outcome for FX, metals and cryptocurrency CFDs. Crypto access itself may be restricted by entity or client classification.
Before opening a multi-day crypto exposure, check the exact product and the applicable schedule. If you cannot explain how and when the overnight cost is calculated, a smaller trade or a demo test may be more appropriate than guessing.
How to request or verify an Islamic account
- Sign in through the real Tickmill Client Area and identify your contracting entity.
- Review the available Islamic/swap-free conditions, instruments and any applicable terms.
- Use the indicated account-conversion request or official support channel.
- Wait for confirmation; do not assume conversion from the existence of a checkbox or a pending request.
- Check the trading terminal, transaction history and overnight charges on a small demonstration position before building a larger strategy around the account’s costs.
Tickmill says it aims to communicate about completed requests by email within one business day. This is an operational target, not a promise that every customer or legal entity has the same eligibility. Where religion-based access conditions apply, provide only the information Tickmill legitimately requests through an authenticated service.
Is a swap-free account necessarily cheaper for a swing trader?
There is no universal answer. It depends on the direction and instrument, your holding period, the account’s commission arrangement and the applicable handling-fee calendar. One strategy might benefit from removing conventional swap charges while another may pay significant fees after a short grace period. Compare total costs using several realistic hold durations rather than evaluating just the first night.
If you are preparing a trade that could remain open across weeks, simulate three scenarios: close before grace ends, close shortly after the first fee applies, and continue holding significantly longer. Include bid-ask spread, round-trip commission and any expected slippage. Read our full trading-cost guide for the general framework.
Frequently asked questions
Does swap-free mean zero overnight cost for every instrument?
No. Tickmill publishes handling fees after grace periods for selected instruments, with additional crypto-related conditions. Check the current schedule before trading.
Does switching to Islamic change my spread?
Tickmill describes the core account pricing setup as otherwise similar, but the applicable entity, symbol and contract terms still determine real transaction costs.
Is this website deciding whether a trade is halal?
No. We explain published broker costs and operational rules; questions of religious compliance require an appropriately qualified source.
